Nate was born November 30, 1918 and raised with his younger brother, Curtis, in Savannah, Georgia. Part of his education was in a military academy. He joined the Army in 1939 and served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Cold War. He served in the European Theatre during WW II mostly in Italy. After the war he was assigned duty in SHAPE headquarters. Later he served as a military advisor to the Greek Army in Northern Greece. He served two tours in the Pentagon J3 (Operations Directorate) Office. Near the end of his career he served a tour in Northern Thailand. This was prior to the Vietnam War.

He and his wife, Florence “Dee”, settled in Minneapolis, Minnesota area after his retirement from the Army.
