Per Son, Tom Hohlweck: My dad said he joined the Navy when he was 17 in 1946. He said the ship he was on was the smallest ship the navy would let cross the Pacific Ocean. His ship was sent to Shanghai, China on the Yangtze River. This is at the time when the Communist were taking over the country. Sailors on shore were getting jumped, beat up and mugged and even killed by Chinese Communists. This happened to my dad while he was on shore. A group of Chinese jumped him; my dad did what he could to fight them off. He woke up several days later and found out a Chinese person saw what was happening and ran to the Military Police and they came to my dad’s rescue. If this person would have not done this there is no doubt my father would have been killed. As it was my dad was stabbed in the groin. My dad made a full recovery. He served until 1949.
