Corporal DeBauche was placed on permanent disability and medically retired after having been struck in the back with an AK-47 round. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with a Combat “V” for crawling through tunnels and enabling the capture of 40 Viet Cong, as well as weapons, equipment, ammunition and medical supplies.
