Steve entered active duty as a Second Lieutenant in May 1970 after graduating from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. He completed the Infantry Officer Basic Course at Fort Benning, Georgia in August 1970, and reported to the 171st Infantry Brigade (S/L) at Fort Wainwright, Alaska in September 1970. He served as an Infantry Platoon Leader and as a Battalion S-4 and left Active duty in May 1972. He joined the 84th Division (Training) in June 1972 and served in various command and staff positions including Division Assistant G-1, 84th Division Headquarters and Headquarters Company Commander and Headquarters Commandant and 1st Battalion 339th Regiment Commander before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in May 1990.
